The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is due to close the first day of the two-day conference with a 90-minute speech on ‘Sustainability, climate change and the corporate world’.
More than 20 speakers will address the event in Marbella, including biodynamics guru Nicolas Joly, soil scientist Claude Bourguignon, Marqués de Griñón winemaker Carlos Falcó, climatologist Greg Jones and Susan McCraith MW.
Sessions will focus on a wide range of subjects, including viticulture, oenology, sparkling wines, packaging, organic and biodynamic winemaking, and carbon dioxide emissions.
Conference organiser the Wine Academy of Spain, headed by Pancho Campo MW, said climate change was now affecting ‘the majority’ of the wine industry.
‘It was with this premise that the congress was instituted in 2006 to offer solutions to mitigate problems in adapting to the changes in climate, and to launch a more environmentally sound business model for the wine industry,’ the academy added in a statement.
Former US vice-president and environmental campaigner Al Gore was the keynote speaker at the previous edition of the event, held in Barcelona in February 2008, addressing delegates via a videolink from Kentucky.
